REST MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY

Nevada has a high prevalence of mental illness and low access to care. Therefore, the proposed design solution is Rest Mental Health Facility. Rest is an inpatient facility, located in Baker, Nevada, whose purpose is to aide in the healing of young adults struggling with acute mental health issues. Further, the overall wellbeing of the staff is taken into consideration in the design. The facility’s remote location allows patients to fully focus on recovery. Rest provides patients with a variety of activity spaces from which to choose. These include areas that are specifically catered towards physical activity, socialization, meditation, therapy, dining, sleeping and connecting to nature. The location of Rest, near Great Basin National Park provides patients with quality views. In addition, the inclusion of a central healing garden provides users with daylighting and a connection to nature. Overall, the design of Rest serves as a safe, judgment free place where young adults can begin their journey towards mental healing.

Rest Mental Health facility will open in Baker, Nevada, near Great Basin National Park. Nevada has a high prevalence of mental illness and low access to care. The facility will be catered towards young adults between the ages of 18-25 that struggle with acute mental health problems.

Hidden Canyon Retreat is the chosen building for this facility because of its remote location and shape. The location allows the patients to fully focus on recovery in an area with stunning views of the mountains. The building’s U shape makes it easy to enclose to create a secure healing garden for the patients and staff at Rest. In addition, Hidden Canyon Retreat is a one-story building, which makes it easier for the staff to monitor patients.
