BUILDING CODES & SYSTEMS SCULPTUREÂ PROJECT
The textile industry dominated Greenville's economy in the 1870s. The mills were powered by the Reedy River. This interaction between man and nature inspired the design of this sculpture. We created an interactive sculpture for people to walk through. The sculpture includes six cylinder structures that grow in size and height as you enter. As people enter, they feel more confined and by the end, free. Steel wheels are used for both the base and ceiling structures to reflect the textile mills. Inside, the history of the Reedy River is displayed on the reflective marble walls. Reflective marble is used as a way for people to see their reflection while they read the history. Biophilic design was embraced through water fall features located in the interior and exterior of each cylinder and hanging vegetation. Part of the sculpture is located above water in order to resemble the textile mills location being at the base of the falls. In order to reflect the textile mills colored dyes that polluted the Reedy River, colored lights are included above each water feature.
