Chill Pie & Ice Cream Shop
Chill, a pie and ice cream shop, located in Chicago, Illinois, showcases the excitement of walking in the city during the evening hours, by letting artificial light create an environment that feels like continual night, all day long.
A more upscale dessert shop was created through a simplistic modern approach. By keeping the design simple, the primary focus is on the light of the space. To add intrigue and create an overall mood for the space, the design showcases symbolic representations of what is offered at this shop. For instance, the frigidness of ice cream is reflected through the combination of cold materials, such as concrete, with cool colors and temperatures of light. The cool colors act to both appeal to and calm the senses. The varying heights of the pendant fixtures found above the high-top tables and front counter, not only act to energize the space but reflect the melting of icicles, similar to melting ice cream. Ice cream cones and slices of pie are emphasized abstractly through triangular shaped cutouts in the three dropped ceiling features. Here, direct light casts overlapping triangular shapes on the walls, flooding more areas with light and adding more interest to the space. Triangular shapes are also found in the acrylic light features that are prominent in the design. The concept behind the repeated acrylic light features was to add drama to the interior in order to draw people into the space. By continuing this feature onto the ceiling, the diffused blue light, fills more of the space, again creating that cool upscale nightlife environment. Having a similar affect, the neon signs further incorporate the vivid lights of Chicago. Above all, light it what transforms Chill into the ideal nightlife spot, perfect for the city of Chicago.
